Facts About The Beloit Public Library
In the middle of the 19th century Beloit saw its Public Library start its operation. First local volunteer fire companies began offering library services; it was only in 1859 that a proper Library was inaugurated.
Thanks to the industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who started the donation of enormous amounts of money in order to fund the construction of public libraries in the United States, the Beloit library board was granted $25,000 to construct the building, with the only condition that the city should finance the maintenance of the library.
At the beginning of the nineteen sixties the old building was considered outdated, which resulted in a $400,000 project for a new library that later on in 1966 got an extra $206,000 of federal funds, to increase its size.
In 1972 when the East Side together with the Beloit libraries agreed to come together, and moved to the former post office located at the Beloit downtown after a renovation at a cost $900.000.
